Yonge/Eglinton

What once was described as the young and the eligible has been transforming over the last couple of years. This is a unique intersection of many different cultures; subsidize housing, young professionals and young families. Yonge and Eglinton is also the cross-section between 3 municipal wards in Toronto, bringing with it the unique diversity of shops and food. There are abundance of restaurants, coffee shops and bars in the neighbourhood situated between tons of constructions and new condo building. Known to be one of the highest pedestrian intersections reveals the vibrancy of life and neighbourhood in this community.

Scarborough Junction

This neighbourhood is part of quintessential old-Scarborough. Once considered a quiet retreat on the outskirts of Toronto, they are now a well connected hub. Originally named Junction because of the two intersecting train lines, the area also now boasts a nexus of transportation with subway, GO station, LRT, and the new Eglinton crosstown. Like the rest of Scarborough you will find everything here: mixed housing, diverse lifestyles, and various ethnic groups. Distinctively you will meet people who want space for growing families that still need to travel downtown, unique mom-and-pop shops, and some of the best South East Asian food that you will find.

Toronto Community Housing (TCH) community

Around St. Monica Catholic School where we gather for Big Church, there is a cluster of TCH buildings around us. Toronto Community Housing are homes to low and moderate-income households. With Yonge and Eglinton typically seen as a high end neighborhood, even people living here are not aware of their existence. Interestingly, as the map shows, beyond the immediate area of where our church is located, there are wealthy neighborhood that have no TCH homes among them. Being aware of how God has strategically placed us in this neighborhood, our church has been reaching out to our neighbors since we moved in. From 2010 to before the pandemic, we have offered monthly brunches to bring the community together. During the pandemic, we attempted to visit people online and in person with food drop-off. Over the years, we have established relationships with people in these buildings. Currently, we have two online groups with our TCH neighbors.

Many of our neighbors in the TCH buildings have many needs – food, friendly visits and spiritual support. We welcome anyone who want to serve the underprivileged to join us. Please contact Edith for details.

Newcomers Along Yonge

In the past year, many people from Hong Kong have arrived in Canada looking for a new start and a place to belong. TLRC wants to welcome these newcomers and journey with them. We want to make a safe and friendly space to share our own experiences as immigrants in Canada, offer helping hands for daily life in a new country, and foster a sense of community as our newest neighbours put down roots here. Anyone is welcome to join us; please contact Cynthia for details.
